What do you do with those big machines?

This is our Mori-Seiki CNC lathe.  It is used primarily to make turned, cyclindrical parts. We make our own bottom bracket shells, tandem eccentric shells, head tubes, steerer tubes and some of our PeriScope tandem parts on this machine. Today, we're using it for some fame tube mitering. The following video shows the mitering of a tandem lateral tube.

As you watch, you may notice the jaws on the the lathe chucks opening and closing as they pass the tube from section to section. These lathe chucks could easily crush the tube, they're very powerful. The process pauses every time the tube is un-clamped, moved and re-clamped. Low-pressure clamping takes longer as the chuck has sensors to determine appropriate clamping force. One of the protocols for low-pressure clamping is a slowing of the process. This still saves a ton of time over manual mitering, and the accuracy is incredible.

Billy Truelove checks the setup before running the mitering program. Mitered tubes are in the basket cart on the right.
